Gold has played a prominent role in Literature in various ways. It has made people aware of the historical, symbolic, and monetary significance of gold. Writers and poets were drawn towards the intriguing, and mythical beauty of gold. They were compelled to write tremendously about gold, in some way, or the other.
One can easily discover the occurrence of gold in ancient Greek, Roman and Hindu myths. Gold was known as the sweat of the Sun. Gold had gained almost a holy status to such an extent that it was even worshipped by the people of several civilizations. Classical literature is full of remarkable references, and one can visualize the importance of gold throughout history.
Gold has been depicted in literature, transcending the literal sense of many a sacred text, poetically and representatively. Analogies have been made between gold and beauty, wealth, splendour, purity etc. There are many references to gold and its financial status, and in literature, it is referred to as a standard of purity. Gold is found in nature in its absolute purest form. Chemically, it is an inert element. Hence, the symbolism, Heart of Gold, which means the purest of hearts that are not capable of any evil or wrongdoing towards their fellow men.
Gold has reflected a lot of features of common human behaviour in literature. It has not only explained the worldliness of this world but has also explained the depth of the soul and mentality of the mankind. Man targets to gain two characters of gold; either the external splendour and sparkle of gold, or the purity of soul and the mind, just like gold.
William Shakespeare says it all; all that glitters is not gold, essentially pointing out that if it sparkles like gold but is not, it is just a fake. Hence, the value of being inimitable, true and real is also correlated with gold in literature. Ironically, gold has brought greed to the mankind. It has raised the desire in man to such an extent that he goes to any measure in his effort to obtain it.
When Doctor Faustus faced the seven deadly sins, one of them was greed, which transformed everything into gold. Thus, gold plays a staged role here, compelling the readers of the play to reflect upon the good and evil sides of mankind.
Odyssey by Homer has various references to gold for its great and metallic characteristics. It is used in a broad framework and this reflects its importance in literature. Gold is used often in the modern literature too; it is, in fact an essential part of our literature.
Robert Frost, an American poet, paints a gorgeous picture of the rural areas of the US in one of his poems, titled “A Peck of Gold”. It is supposed that he is referring to the California Gold Rush in his poem. It is also fascinating in a way, because it shows the world and its association with gold through the eyes of a child.
